Happy Valentine’s Day!
Valentine’s Day is my absolute favorite holiday. Even in my awkward middle school years, brace-faced and dateless (ok, and high school and college and some adult years), I always felt like it was a chance to show my love to others as much as it was a chance to dream about getting chocolates and roses from the football captain.
Unfortunately, like most holidays, we can lose the joy of the holiday in the chaos of the marketing. It becomes about giving and getting and we forget the purpose. Flower and candy ads are on every corner, jewelry flashes on every television, cheesy taglines that stretch to fit the theme.
Wouldn’t businesses be wise to take advantage of holidays? Absolutely- but there are ways to reach your audience and build your brand without giving way to flashy consumerism.
Express your love
Show appreciation to your customers by discounting products or services, or sending handwritten notes to your loyal clients. Have a bowl of candy by the checkout stand. Find ways to genuinely express your appreciation for those who keep you in business.
Pay it forward
If you’ve been blessed financially, pay it forward. Make a donation, either in time or money, to a non-profit or charity that you are passionate about. Then encourage your customers to get involved as well.
Engage your audience
Encourage your audience to engage in the holiday and in the spirit of loving others. For example, you might share a giveaway on Facebook where you encourage readers to share something they love about themselves, or something they love about someone else to be entered into the raffle. Or encourage your audience to pay it forward to someone they love with your brand- for example, if you sell chocolate bars, encourage them to give a chocolate bar to someone.
There are lots of ways to spread the love. The important part is that we do.
100 handwritten valentines and chocolate bags ready to go
This year, Honey MAP is celebrating Valentine’s Day by giving valentines and chocolates to Bridges (a shelter for single mothers who have escaped from domestic abuse) and CareNet (a crisis pregnancy center). We are thankful for amazing organizations that show love to people every day, and it’s a privilege to show our love and support to them. If you would like to join us in this effort, you can contact either organization by clicking their names above.
