Do’s and Don’ts of LinkedIn
While social media is intended to be a personalized platform, there are some definite dos and don’ts, especially in a professional space like LinkedIn. Here’s a few that top our list of proper LinkedIn etiquette.
Have a profile photo. Having a photo adds a layer of credibility and approachability. It should be recent (within the last 2-3 years), a basic head and shoulders shot, close enough to see your face. Wear simple and modest clothes (solid colors are good) and have a simple background.
Feature other people in your profile photo. Make sure you are the only person in your photo. If you are cropping from a group photo, make sure there are no arms/hands/hair/body remnants of any kind of anyone else left in the photo.
Be yourself. Follow companies and individuals who interest you, join groups, and write in your own voice.
Do or say anything that you would not do or say in an interview with the CEO. It’s not a good idea to use a photo from a pub crawl or club party, or to say anything too casual or too inappropriate on your profile. Save the emoticons and “abreevs” for Facebook. (This also means no non-work posts, including cat videos, riddles, religious or political memes)
Join groups, follow companies network with others. Make it a regular habit to search for and add new connections. If you go to a networking event or you collect someone’s business card, try to send them an invitation within the next 24 hours. Stay active for the best opportunities to network, job search, and establish subject credibility.
Send a generic connection invitation. Instead, change the templated text to something more personal that reminds that person how you met. For example: “Hi John, It was a pleasure meeting you at the Business Association mixer last night. Please let me know if I can provide any business services in the future.”
Showcase your work. The LinkedIn Pulse is a great place to publish content to establish your thought leadership and industry expertise. Likewise, regularly sharing content and engaging with others’ content can be a great way to keep your name in the limelight. We suggest posting 1-2 times/week max in a forum like LinkedIn.
Be overly self-promotional. It is ok to showcase your work or to pitch your business, but make sure it’s not one-sided. Engage with others and focus more on how you can help them than how they can help you. Keeping all of your content about you without engaging in others’ content is a sure way to lose engagement.
Publicly associate with groups/companies/individuals who may be controversial. Be mindful that if you are joining religious or political groups, that information will be public to a potential employer. And be aware that who you are associated with on LinkedIn could be a reflection of who you are perceived as by others. Be sure your connections are on the up and up. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to only connect with people you know.
